Donations for hiring freelancers for fixes and new addons
« on: May 03, 2014, 08:18:31 PM »
The administrator, moderators and members do a great job here in keeping osDate up to date and running but we can't expect them to fix everything. My idea is to have CBG install the donations mod and then he can run donation drives to hire freelancers to fix things such as profile generator, google maps and others.

This can be done in a number of ways. Core plugins that get fixed will be free to everyone and will get  added to the next version of 2.65. Special modifications such as facebook login and other ideas members come up with will be free to donation members and for members to be able to download these modification they will need to become a donation member for a small fee say $5.

In this way osDate 2.65 can grow at a faster rate to become the best and most complete dating site  platform available.

Hi,

Do you have a person/freelancer in mind?

Also would that $5 be a one off,  or monthly?

Hello and greetings from Canada. I have finally got internet out here for my duration

I agree with scvoyager there should be some form of payment and set price for download plugins and mods because of the hard work that people do but some people can't afford $5 a month for a subscription.
Maybe a special part of the forum where people can sell mods and plugins and request work with a set price and part of the money going to osdateforum.com something like fiver.com

I like many enjoy learning with osdate and having to buy all mods would get expensive to learn hence the reason osdateforum.com is good because people help each other all the time.

No I don't have any freelancer in mind, I have used a freelance site many times when I need to get something done and I'm a member myself on a few of them. I think to start with would getting the treasury mod installed first and start with the main fixes for osDate 2.65 and think about the paid addons at a later point.

Hi all,

If the mod payment was monthly then I wouldn't agree!
But if it was a one off payment only with free updates then yes as long as they not full of bugs hence the free updates.

Just remember some people aren't in it for the money, they do it as a challenge and like to help for free.
Food for thought as Tufat didn't charge for their mods and this forum is doing well so far as it is.

Hi,

I think osDate 2.x should be left to die and start a fresh with osDate 3/PDO code base.
My reasons for saying that is osDate 2,x has lots of small bugs that could turn in to spending as much time fixing as sorting out osDate 3 and it could still be outdated.

osDate needs to have a stable base of the basics, before looking at plugins or anything else.

If you look at osDate 2.x the problems are plugins and bugs in core, along with outdated Smarty and various other things.

For those that got osDate 3, Smarty had been updated at the time of development to 3 and it should work out the box for PHP 5.3+

I know there was not many osDate 3 testers, but I was one of them, so have the code.

Here is what I am thinking, I strip down osDate 3 to the basics (I do mean the basics everything that not needed, such as plugins etc.. will go)and release that, as a beta.
We then can all work on it, in our own time and hosting account and have a development forum.

If we did that the code, would need to be stable, before we thought of anything else, such as design, language, adding extra code etc...
As it would be as stable as the base is.

Let me know your view on the above.

CBG (Garry)

Hi CBG,

I totally agree with you on this, excellent idea, I have been thinking why version 3 wasn't being updated or stripped back to the
basics.
I hope the carousal pics option is not brought back though, never liked that in the template.  ???
Count me in, I am for this in where I can help.

I like this idea CBG. As osDate2.65 is working good the future problem is going to be in converting it to smarty 3 which is completely different than smarty 2.8.

I'm in for this just let us know were the download is so we can start taking a look.

VJ hasn't released PDO for public use and you have no right to make it public. I have it, you have it and you asked and was blown off.
If you make it a public release on your website I will need you to leave.

You are right VJ never released it, however it has had no work on it for a few years now and I thought I was helping the forum out, you was happy when I said I was going to strip PDO down, but it still would be no differences. Fine, it will not be released.

Also where do you get off telling me if I release it on MY site I will have to leave?

I agree with CBG. I think osDate3/PDO should be released, as it maybe useful to some members. From what I know, Vijay walked away from osDate few years ago and osDate was free software and original osDate site does not even have osDate forum anymore. Also, Garry (CBG) is the owner of this site and nobody can ask him to leave.
