I like this idea but when visiting the developers page on google marked in red it states:

Use of the Distance Matrix API must relate to the display of information on a Google Map
I don't like getting on the bad side of goggle so it seems to use this matrix a map also needs to be shown somewhere or am I wrong about this?

hi mate, no map needed, use geo location and google distance matrix, you only have to add map if yu want to display the location on a map, http://www.w3schools.com/html/html5_geolocation.asp

Have your read through using the location matrix with google? I don't care about w3schools for this is a firefox big government type of thing and browsers as chrome, safari, now yahoo and others don't care about the rule that ff wants to put in place.
Always read the rules of using google options. If not you will learn the hard way... been their and done that.

Ah ok, If I need to put a map in place I'll just create a new page and put the map on there,
