How to do Messaging in osDate 2.xx User Manual

osDate 2.xx has two new messaging features: the php121 instant messenger, and a simple "shoutbox" which lets your users send "shout outs" to anyone who wishes to hear them (shout outs are NOT one-on-one messaging). If you wish to have more advanced chatting capabilities, you should consider FlashChat.

IMPORTANT: Messaging of any kind usually GREATLY increases your server load! If you are on a "shared" web hosting service rather than a dedicated server, this is probably not the solution for you.

There are two steps to enable either the php121 instant messenger, or the shoutbox. To enable these features, open your Global Settings admin page, and change the options shown below from "N" to "Y".

Then, ensure the members of the appropriate membership levels can access the newly-enabled tools, by checking the "Allow instant messaging" and "Allow php121 instant messenger". You may wish to only allow these options for members with a higher membership level, for example.

When the shout-box is enabled, a new panel will appear (by default below the "Site Statistics"). Shoutbox messages are small, embedded messages that are not saved in long term storage.

Using the Picture Editor

osDate permits users to upload images, which can be viewed directly from the user profile using the Pictures link. The first image uploaded by the user is the default image for the profile. Depending on your version of osDate, the user may or may not be able to specify other images as the default profile image.

The Pictures link is unavailable if the user doesn't have the necessary user permissions to view profile images, or if they are not logged in.

The default profile picture that you see here is stored in the /images/ folder, and vary based on gender. They are: /images/male.jpg, /images/female.jpg, and /images/couple.jpg.

If you'd like to require administrative approval before users may upload images, you can specify that in the global settings tool (the top-most setting in the below screenshot). This may be named something else, depending on your version of osDate.

If admin approval is required, then a new option will appear in the admin toolbar, on the left-side: "Approve Pictures". Remember: if you don't see this link, then check to ensure that the "Pictures must be approved..." option is set to "Y" in the Site Settings.

If picture approval is set to "Y" in the global site settings, then the Approve Pictures tool will allow you to individually Approve or Reject each uploaded image.

Assuming that a user has permission to add and edit images, the "Manage Pictures" link in the User Panel will open this page. You may specify a different image for the main picture and for the thumbnail. Often users want the thumbnail to be a "close up" version of the primary photo. In this example, the thumbnail is a bit difficult to see, since the face is quite small.

To fix this , I've cropped the main picture to show only the face, and then re-uploaded the thumbnail alone. In the Manage Pictures tool, users can edit either the Main Picture, or the Thumbnail, and delete/re-uploaded either of these images independently. Here's what my result looked like:

Clicking on the "Edit Main Picture" or "Edit Thumbnail" button will open a Flash-based image editing tool, as shown here. This is a quick way to allow users image editing capabilities, who may otherwise not have the means to do so. For example, users who do not own an advanced image editor like Photoshop may find this tool useful.

The Flash image editor requires that images are non-progressive JPG files. It will attempt - using the PHP GD libraries - to make this conversion on the fly. The image Editor may look a bit different in later versions

Editing E-Mail Receiving Preferences

In osDate v2.xx, we have introduced the concept of user preferences. This is controlled at the membership level. If a membership level does not have this right, it will not be displayed in the user menu. From the user menu, click on the link My Settings. It will bring up a page containing following options.

Send e-mail when a new message is received. (Yes/No)
Send e-mail when someone winks at me. (Yes/No)
Send e-mail when someone adds a comment in my blog. (Yes/No)
Send membership expiry reminder e-mails. (Yes/No)
Send e-mail when recipient of my message read it. (Yes/No)
Send e-mail when someone adds me to a buddy list. (Yes/No)
Send e-mail when someone adds me to a ban list. (Yes/No)
Send e-mail when someone adds me to a hot list. (Yes/No)
Allow users in my buddy list to view my private albums. (Yes/No)
Allow users in my hot list to view my private albums. (Yes/No)

Frequency, in days, to send 'my matches' emails. Enter 0 if you do not wish to receive these emails.

These are just a start and new things will be added as osDate development proceeds.

All defaults are 'No'. The default Frequency for sending "my matches" email is 7 days.

This should be set if any user is not receiving some emails mentioned in this list.

Setting up Couple and Group Profiles

osDate v2.xx allows you to create a Couple / Group profile, provided that each member of the couple or group already has an existing profile.

What does this mean?

You can identify one or more independent profiles as part of a Couple / Group profile. Like a Man profile and Woman profile, or combination of two profiles can be treated as a Couple profile. If the number of profiles is more than two, then make it a Group profile.

How does it work?

First you create all individual profiles as we normally create male and female profiles. Please complete each profile in full. Then create a new profile and select Couple or Group as gender. This will ask you to add individual user names which is part of this new profile. e.g. for Couple, you may give user names of two profiles.

When user searches for couples, system will display the Couple profile details and will give link for profile of each individual member. Thus, the total number of profiles involved for a Couple is actually 3: each of the two members of the couple, and the couple profile itself. This is useful because each person in the couple may have his/her own preferences, then they may have preferences as a couple, too. We believe this mechanism provides the maximum degree of flexibility.

Using the Advanced Searching

osDate v2.xx has advanced searching where the users can search on literally any profile field. In addition to gender searches (men searching for men/women, women searching for men/women, users may search for any username, specific age ranges, based on zip code proximity if the zip codes for the country have been loaded, etc.). Independent search options also exist for searching blogs and some other features of osDate.

By default, the system will attempt to perform a "cross matching" of similar interests - i.e. the searched profile's search preferences will be used to determine the correctness of the search. Hence, the search engine will check to ensure the searched profile is also looking for the searching profile's gender. For example, if a man is searching for users of all genders, the resulting profiles also should be looking for a man. This may lead one to believe that the search results are incorrect (i.e., "Why didn't John come up in my search results? Because although you may be looking for a man, he's not looking for a woman!")

If you want to turn off this cross matching feature of searches, in the global settings admin tool, there is an option to Bypass user look gender matching in searches?. Set this to 'Y', the default setting.

You can do searches on many profile preferences also - religion, political preferences, height, weight, fitness activities, and any other profile criteria.

You can save your searches for future recalls and quick searches, if search saving is available for your permission level. Blog searches are also available, again if blogs are enabled and blog searching is permitted for your permission level.

Pharg ( Phill )
