Cron jobs & hosting services
« on: January 01, 2015, 10:28:55 PM »
So I know the 15 min limit for cron jobs in most host providers is not advisable for osdate. However has anyone actually experimented with this? I have one installed on godaddy with a few trial members, >1000 and it looks like it works fine even with the 15min intervals. Then again its not in a realtime environment with multiple members logged in at once. In short, can you get away with godaddy's cron limit?

I found one recommended hosting service for osdate with no time limits on cron jobs: certifiedhosting.com

ps: I searched for this topic and couldn't find a definite answer. Admin please let me know if this discussion has already been covered, I can delete my post.

Hi mrswitchonline,

I haven't personally tested the cron jobs, but the reason they have it set to 15 minutes is so that
they don't over use the hosts resources, especially on a shared host if there are to many resources
happening at the same time can over load it and make yours and other sites on the host go down.

You don't want to get your hosts admin on your case by over loading them  :o

Yes I heard that could happen. But if you had them all set to 15min intervals per the requirements I believe it would not overload the server since you are within the guidelines? However I'm wondering more how that would affect your site...real slow user experience due to cacheing issues maybe?

Hi mrswitchonline,

There is really only two ways to find out, ask your hosts support or try it, either way you will find out.

Plus I think but not positive on this, the cron jobs are normally all set to a different time to prevent overloading :)

Ok thanks, I had talked to Godaddy and honestly they weren't any help, except for telling me what the limit was, which I already knew. I guess the experiment is underway! ;D I will see how this affects perfomance for a small dating site. If I hit a dead end I guess I will find out the hard way.

Just a suggestion, maybe we could start a list of hosts that are osdate friendly?

Also I found something interesting I have never tried before: easycron.com , a 3rd party webcron. Still looking into that some more. Not sure if anyone else has experience with it or if its even relevant to this case.

Hi mrswitchonline,

Thanks for the suggestion, you will get more tips and comments later on from
other members that run their own hosts.
